Preparations for the grand opening of Asia’s largest tulip garden are in full swing
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, nestled between the picturesque Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Hills in Srinagar, will open its gates to the public on March 26, marking the commencement of the tourism season in the Kashmir Valley.
Formerly known as Siraj Bagh, this garden is Asia's most extensive tulip garden. Established in 2007 to extend the tourism season beyond the traditional summer and winter months, the garden spans approximately 55 hectares. This year, it boasts a record 1.7 million tulip bulbs across 74 varieties, complemented by other spring flowers such as hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens. To enhance the visitor experience, the Jammu and Kashmir Floriculture Department has introduced an online booking facility for tourists this year.
The garden is expected to attract many visitors, building on the success of previous years. In 2024, it welcomed over 430,000 tourists, including domestic and international visitors. Visitors can look forward to vibrant colours and various cultural activities, including local handicrafts exhibitions, Kashmiri music performances, and traditional cuisine tastings. These events aim to showcase the region's rich cultural heritage alongside the natural beauty of the tulip blooms.
