Dubai: Zayed University suffered two consecutive losses in the basketball tournament on the opening day of the Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) Ramadan Sports Gathering in Sharjah.

The Zayed University first went down 33-3 to the Philippines Community Club and then crashed 30-10 against the American University of Sharjah (AUS).

In another match, the Lebanese Community team was handed a walkover when the team representing the Ajman Educational Zone failed to show up.

Earlier, the draw for the various competitions were held at the SLC premises with hosts SLC being grouped along with Lebanese Community Club in Abu Dhabi (LCC), Zayed University, and the American University of Sharjah in basketball.

The draw for the tournament, organised by the SLC's Womens Sports Department, was held in the presence of Awatif Al Halabi, head of the Ramadan Sports Gathering, Mariam Al Mansouri, the volleyball administrator at SLC and Captain Amina Thani, representative from the Ajman Educational Zone.

"Everyone has shown a lot of excitement in this competition and we hope to put up a better show," said Al Halabi.

The basketball tournament has attracted eight teams, while the volleyball competition will have six teams participating. There will be four teams taking part in the table tennis event with hosts SLC taking on University of Sharjah, Ajman University and the Arabic Culture Club.

In the basketball competition, the teams divided into two groups will first play on a league basis with the best two qualifying for the semifinals. Matches will be held daily from 8:30pm.

The annual event is sponsored by FAL Group, the strategic sponsor of SLC and Sharjah Islamic Bank.
