New Zealand rugby star Jonah Lomu spent what turned out to be the last days of his life on holiday with his family in Dubai.

Lomu, 40, died suddenly in the early hours of Wednesday UAE time after returning to New Zealand.

Despite battling for years the kidney disease which ended his playing career, his death still came as a total shock to those close to him.

Lomu and his family, including wife Nadene and sons Brayley and Dhyreille, stopped off in Dubai on their way back from the UK to New Zealand following the Rugby World Cup.

During his time in the UK he made a number of public appearances and looked as healthy as he had done in a long time.

And he also enjoyed his time in Dubai, visiting the Dubai Fountains, the Burj Khalifa and the Burj Al Arab, while staying at Madinat Jumeirah.

Here is a selection of what he tweeted during his stay:

Lomu passed away suddenly at his Auckland home, family spokesman John Mayhew said.

“It was totally unexpected, Jonah and his family arrived back from the UK last night and he suddenly died this morning,” Mayhew told TV3
