Dubai: The Dubai Sports Council (DSC) has launched the second edition of its inter-school rugby competition for girls at the Shaikha Hind indoor pitch.

Organised in collaboration with the Dubai Educational Zone and Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), this year’s tournament has attracted 56 schools in seven sporting disciplines.

Held under supervision of the UAE Rugby Association, the rugby tournament has eleven school teams from Dubai, who have been divided into two categories. The Millennium School, Creativity Model School, Al Salam School, Umm Suqueim Model School and Al Khaleej Private School are in one group, while the second group includes Dubai International School, Al Quoz, Al Raya School, Sakina Bint Al Hussain School, Al Kuwait School, Jumeirah Model School and Asma Bint Al Nuaman School.

The rugby competition is being organised in keeping with the UAE Rugby Association’s goals of promoting rugby at the grassroots level so as to assemble a national squad in the future.

Fawziya Fraidoon, Board Member, UAE Rugby Association said that the initiative is very much in keeping with the directives of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman, DSC. “The focus is on the future and we have made a start by attracting eleven school teams in just our second year of this competition,” Fraidoon said.
