Dubai: The Dubai Exiles Under-11s made their mark on the world stage by winning the South Coast Rugby Festival in Torquay in the UK recently.

Overcoming adverse weather conditions and some of the strongest teams from across England and Wales, the Exiles were unbeaten during their maiden tour of the country.

Including Emirati girl Sophie Shams the team warmed up with emphatic victories over Clifton, Bath and Rhymney and kept the momentum rolling into the Festival. Following a successful domestic season with wins in the UAE League and the HSBC Rugby Festival, the Exiles Under-11s decided to take their first team to the UK to test their talent against overseas opposition.

Memorable tour

Adapting well to the conditions and local refereeing, the Exiles won their group and knock-out matches with ease before reaching the final against current Welsh champions Rhonda, which they won three tries to nil to seal a memorable tour.

"All teams that we played against were surprised by the quality of Gulf rugby," said a jubilant Andy Williams, one of the team's two coaches.

"The teams in the UK were also excited about the opportunities of visiting Dubai in the near future and playing against some of the best clubs and schools in the region now they know the standard of rugby."

Marek Sheridan, the team's other coach, said: "Our team comprised players from different nationalities, but there was a great sense of camaraderie and that showed in the performances."
