The Houston Rockets are looking to force a Game 7 on Friday at Warriors home
Los Angeles: The Houston Rockets stayed alive in the NBA playoffs with a big 131-116 win over the Golden State Warriors in Game 5.
Fred VanVleet scored 26 points, Amen Thompson had 25, and Dillon Brooks added 24 for the Rockets. Houston got off to a fast start and led by as many as 31 points. Warriors coach Steve Kerr took out his starters, including Stephen Curry, with nearly six minutes left in the third quarter.
The Rockets came with loaded guns, shooting almost 65% in the first quarter and taking a 40-24 lead. VanVleet made three three-pointers, and the team hit all 13 of their free throws. The Warriors couldn’t keep up, with Curry and Jimmy Butler going scoreless in the first quarter.
Golden State’s offense struggled, while Houston’s strong defense held them to just 49 points by halftime. Thompson had five steals, including one from Curry that led to a three-point play. VanVleet finished the half with a layup, giving the Rockets a 76-49 lead.
Curry ended with 13 points, Butler had eight, and reserve Moses Moody led the Warriors with 25.
Late in the game, emotions ran high. Warriors reserve Pat Spencer got ejected for head-butting Rockets center Alperen Sengun, who nearly had a triple-double with 15 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists.
Golden State will have another chance to win the series at home in Game 6 on Friday.
