Dubai: Rory McIlroy remains undecided about taking up European Tour membership next season, despite being reminded of the rule that missing a European Tour season would result in him being overlooked for future Ryder Cup captaincy.

“It’s 20 years away,” he said of any possible future captaincy of Europe. “Everyone has to look out for themselves and next year I’m looking out for me.

“At the same time, I don’t have to make a decision on it. I didn’t say it was a definite. It’s up in the air. I don’t have to make a decision until May, so we’ll see how it goes.”

At present the four-time Major-winning Northern Irishman only intends to play two events in Europe next season, two short of the necessary four events outside of Majors and WGCs to satisfy membership criteria. Instead he bids to play more in America against stronger fields in a bid to get back in contention for the Majors and to reclaim his World No. 1 spot.

“Everyone has to do what’s best for them, and for me next year, I’m trying to do what’s best for me to help me get back to being the best player in the world and to try and win Majors again.”

Asked if causing a stir with the European Tour was a sacrifice worth taking, he replied: “Geez, I’d cause all the stirs in the world if I could go back to winning Majors.”
