Golf is often called ‘the gentleman's sport,' but women are equally enthusiastic about golf. Whether competing for titles in local or international tournaments, or playing for pleasure, golf is a sport with much to offer for all ages and both genders.

Although we don't often hear about it nearly as much as men's golf, women's golf is definitely out there and alive! There are some terrific women's golf players out there and women's golf is finding growing support in the UAE.

I am thrilled at the opportunity to write the golf column and clearly the desire to write about women's golf comes naturally due to my role in Women's Golf Middle East and the goal we aspire to reach for women's golf in the UAE. I will aim to bring you information and insights into golf in the UAE - for men and women alike.

Statistically, women are the largest new group coming into the game of golf today. Yet, often frustrated with their skill-set, they are also the largest group that leaves the game and does not return. The involvement of Women's Golf Middle East will open the pathway to success for new players as they progress from the initiation phase through to participation at golf facilities and to acquire the knowledge, skill, and attitude to lead healthy, active lives and enjoy success in all levels of sport participation.

This will ensure that golf remains a lifelong passion for the many, not just a competitive goal for the few. It will also ensure better access to and familiarity with this wonderful lifetime sport that not only encourages physical activity but a very strong sense of core values. There is a rise in passionate women golfers gracing the best greens in the UAE today.

These skillful players are influencing the game in a host of interesting ways, and are challenging the old preconceptions of what it means to be a golfer and to love the game.

It is imperative that women, alongside their male contemporaries, have arenas where they can improve their techniques and socialise with like-minded people. Many women golfers would agree that while it is both enjoyable and valuable to play with male golf partners, as so often happens in golfing couples, it is also hugely important to have access to women-orientated spheres if they are to reach their full potential.

Meeting and mingling with like-minded people can lead to an ever-expanding network of professional and social contacts, new businessed, personal growth and, often, unexpected opportunities. It's a matter of putting together people who have something in common - golf - who might not otherwise get together at all. It should be fun.

Happy golfing ladies and gents!

Hannecke Reinholz is the Managing Director of Women’s Golf Middle East
