There's no one with more ambition than me: Montgomerie
Abu Dhabi: Colin Montgomerie is in his 20th year on The European Tour but the Scottish star feels age is a challenge for him as he eyes a top 10 ranking in 2007.
"It's more of a challenge to me than it is a problem. Some players at my age would see it as a problem. Some feel they want it more but there's no one with more ambition than me, nobody," declared Montgomerie, who is currently ranked 17 in the world after a fine 2006.
"I am anxious and I want to get back to the top 10. That's enough fire to keep me going, really anxious to get going and trying to win again," he said.
Commenting on Vijay Singh's win in the PGA Tour, Montgomerie said, "Yeah, he's older than me and he's won again this year already. And golf is one of these games.
"Age doesn't really come into it in many ways as long as you're flexible, as long as the fitness is to a certain level, we can do this."
The great Scot said the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship was getting bigger and better.
"I think this tournament will grow and grow. It is just in its second year. We have Retief playing, Sergio is back again, it's great that Chris DiMarco has come back to defend and we have Harrington, Casey. Great strength here, so it is a good tournament."
Montgomerie said the finish here last year proved that it was a good course.
Good course
"It is a very good, strong golf course. We had a good top six last year and a good top ten finishing, which proves it was a good golf course."
He might be one of the 'elder' players on the Tour but Montgomerie still has the fire and desire to challenge and stay at the top.
"I turn 44 in June and I feel that I can play longer than most guys can. I have always, always had great ambition, great drive and it has not diminished in any way over the years, not at all."
