This Saturday, Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club is set to host the inaugural Independence Day Cup, with a 4pm shotgun start for the nine-hole tournament.

The tournament is a celebration of both the Indian and Pakistan Independence Days.

There will be a maximum of 52 players in this individual Stableford format with 95 per cent handicap allowance with players using their handicap index.

The event is open to men, ladies and juniors of all nationalities as long as they hold a valid Emirates Golf Federation Handicap. The handicap limits are 28 for men and boys and 36 for women and girls.

Entries received to date include the following: Surinder Singh Kandhari (16), Arnel Valencia (14), Russell Yeomans (4), Muhammad Shafiq (17), Mukti Rai (7) and Ashok Kumar (14).

Entries are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis on the WeTel TV website.

The organiser of the inaugural Independence Day Cup, Professor Adil Matin, President of Retail TV, said: “This is the first event we have organised under the WeTel TV platform. Our vision is to promote golf and especially the community and corporate side of the game throughout the UAE. WeTel TV is the official media member of Expo 2020 Dubai and the only English language information channel based in the UAE.

“We are genuinely impressed to receive a mix of entries of many nationalities, age and sex for this Independence Day Cup. We have a few spots remaining in the field that we expect to fill before the close of entries.

“The next golfing project this season for WeTel TV will be the International Peace Day Tolerance Cup which will have a team format played under national flags. This is planned to be held on September 21 and further details of the event, venue, format will be shared shortly.”

The Entry Fees are — SGSC Full Members: Dh95; SGSC Midweek Members: Dh165; Non-SGSC Members: Dh240; EGF Members: Dh220.

In addition to the overall, divisional and novelty prizes there will be a special hole-in-one prize of a BMW 218i Gran Coupe sponsored by BMW AGMC.

There will be prizes for both the gross and net champions and their respective divisions.
