In-form Turner clinches Emirates junior championship
Dubai: Matthew Turner's winning form continued yesterday as he successfully defended his Emirates Golf Club Junior Championship with some superb golf at The Majlis Course. Matthew has been a regular on the podium this year in both junior and senior events. He started the day as the clear favourite, although Eric Hesson, Jae Jun Hong, Sean Thornberry and Robert Legnar were also in contention for the silverware. Thornberry set the pace with 38. Soon, Turner and Jae Jun both reached the turn on 37. Thornberry's challenge faded with a disastrous triple-bogey on the short 11th hole. Honours were evenly spread on the back-9 and when Turner over-hit his eagle putt on the 18th, Jae Jun had a chance to apply some pressure. But his own eagle attempt just ran over the edge of the cup to leave Turner with two putts to win his second title. Tania Sangani was the girls' champion with a steady 111, while young Daniel Hendry won the Nett Division with 68.
Traditional race's final heat today
Dubai: The fourth and final heat for the traditional rowing race will be held at the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC). Starting the race from inside the Palm Jumeirah, 50-odd boats will row their way to the Le Meridien Mina Seyahi lagoon at 3.30pm. The race is a display of sheer strength, skill and excellent communication between the skipper and rowers. Moreover, it makes for a perfect show of endurance. The last few races held at the Dubai Creek showed the determination of the rowers and the encouragement by the skippers of each team with chants of patriotic verses and stomping of the feet as the rowers rowed in unison.
