Al Hamra Challenge: Open Jackpot

While the giants of golf were battling against course and elements at Carnoustie, 56 intrepid golfers were braving the heat in Ras Al Khaimah as Al Hamra Golf Club staged its inaugural Open Challenge.

All taking part had an eye on the Scottish links as each player was paired with a golfer at Carnoustie, with the professional's scores from the first two rounds being combined with the nett score over 18 holes at Al Hamra in a unique fun way to find the winner.

Players picked a pro "blind" before the start of play and it was only later revealed who was paired with who.

Daniel Samuel hit the jackpot when his own magnificent nett 69 on Al Hamra's links-style layout was combined Sergio Garcia's first two rounds of 65 and 71 for a winning 205 total.

In second place and striking a blow for the ladies was Jay Crook, whose nett 67 coupled with Jim Furyk's pair of 70s gave her a 207 total.

Third was another lady, Serifa D'Souza whose fantastic nett 66 coupled with Rod Pampling's 70 and 72 gave her a score of 208. Nearest the pin prizes went to Chris Picken (4th hole) and Dick Fear (7th hole).

Pitch, putt and a giggle

The new Rene Valencia pitch and putt course hosted the weekly Al Ghazal Golf Club “Hit 'n' Giggle'' competition. The morning session saw the staff play with an individual strokeplay format.

In the second session members played a three-member team strokeplay competition. Hazarat's 34 took the morning honours but captain David set a new course record in the afternoon with 30.

The winning team were Norman Galloway, Brian Chew and Frederic Corsiglia with 106. Second were James Mclean, Bernie Blanchard and Wilna Foulkes (120). Third were Philip Wilkes, Pat and Emily Gordon (121).

SUMMER SIZZLER
The Al Hamra Summer Sizzler takes place on Friday, August 3, and will be played in a stableford better-ball format. Players can enter in pairs or, if entering singly, will be drawn with a partner for the day.

There will be individual tee times from 7.30am, which should mean the worst of the heat is avoided. The event is open to all players with a valid handicap (maximum 28 men, 36 women).

The closing date is Monday, July 30, and entries will be strictly on a first-come, first-served basis should the tournament be oversubscribed.

The entry fees are Dh225 (UGA), Dh250 (non-members) and Dh200 (juniors).

Entry includes green fee, shared cart, range balls, prizes, special events and first beverage in the clubhouse. To enter contact 050-432 2067 or e-mail: enquiries@alhamragolf.com
