Morocco's Barsheed Club stun much-fancied Brazilian team

Abu Dhabi: Egypt's Wadi Dijla and Morocco's Barsheed Club took contrasting routes to the final of the women's football in the Armed Forces Officers Club's 11th Ramadan Sports Festival.

After a goalless encounter, Wadi Dijla edged out Bahrain 2-0 through the tie-breaker, while the Moroccan side defeated the fancied Brazilian team 4-1 in front of a large crowd at the AFOC premises.

The first semifinal between Wadi Dijla and Bahrain provided a lot of thrills and excitement and in the end it was the inability to convert the chances that paved the way for a tie-breaker.

The Egyptian girls, backed by a strong support base, scored two through Ehsan Eid and Dina Abdul Hamid, while Bahrain faltered and made their exit.

Total command

In the second semifinal, Barsheed were always in command and after taking a 1 4-1.

The Moroccan team dominated 1-0 lead in the first half, they never allowed the Brazilians into the game. Mina Rokbi and Latifa Zarhooni played well and scored a goal each while Claudia Verenice netted for the losers.

The Egyptians continued to dominate the racket sport at the AFOC Sports Festival.

After the sweep by Egyptian players in the squash event that concluded a day earlier, it was the Mamoun brothers who stamped Egypt's authority in the tennis competition.

Mohammad Al Mamoun defeated his brother Karim to win the singles title 6-2, 6-4.

Immensely popular

The brothers then combined effectively to subdue the French challenge of last year's singles winner Julian Maes and Cristan Meniane. Action continued in other events with the Dh1 million football sevens event continuing to be the showpiece competition.

The Dh10 million Ramadan Sports Festival is being organised by the Armed Forces Officers Club, under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs.

Unexpected surprise for Al Za'abi

Marwan Johar Al Za'abi from Abu Dhabi Police and holder of ticket No 22470 was the lucky winner of a Toyota FJ Cruiser in the second draw held on the sidelines of the AFOC Ramadan Sports Festival.

"This is an unexpected surprise and I am extremely happy and will always have good memories of the AFOC Games. I received the free ticket from a Filipino volunteer while I was watching the football games. This is an early Eid gift," he said.
