The Swede delivered a standout performance to help Newcastle advance in the Carabao Cup

Alexander Isak delivered another standout performance to help Newcastle United advance to the Carabao Cup final, showcasing the qualities Arsenal sorely lack in their frontline.
While the Swedish striker didn’t score in the Magpies' 2-0 win over the Gunners in the second leg, his influence was undeniable as he outmanoeuvred Arsenal’s defence and played a pivotal role in Jacob Murphy's opening goal.
Since recovering from a toe injury in October, Isak has been in electric form, scoring 16 goals and providing four assists in just 17 Premier League appearances. His contributions have lifted Eddie Howe’s side to sixth in the league and powered their march to the Carabao Cup final.
Against Arsenal, Isak's performance epitomised the striker the Gunners have been longing for - a physical, dynamic presence capable of unsettling even the best defenders.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville described Isak’s display as one that left Arsenal’s centre backs “on toast.”
“He’s messing the Arsenal centre backs about. Look at him up against Saliba - he just pokes it around the corner and creates chaos. They can’t handle him, and not many can.”
His ability to hold up play, combine with teammates, and dominate in one-on-one duels along with his deadly nature in front of goals is one of the reasons he is one of the most sought after stiker in the world right now.
For Arsenal, the defeat only served as a reminder that they need to buy a No.9. With Gabriel Jesus struggling with injury and Kai Havertz deployed out of position, the Gunners’ attack has lacked a clinical edge. Arsenal’s inability to convert clear cut chances has become a recurring issue.
Despite sitting second in the Premier League, Arsenal are the only team in the top six without a player in double figures for goals this season. Havertz, while technically gifted, has managed nine league goals, but that is a far cry from the output of the likes of Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Isak.
The absence of a recognised striker may not have been glaring in Wednesday evening’s second leg, but Arsenal's lack of cutting edge in front of goal during the first leg ultimately proved costly. Despite registering 23 shots at the Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta’s side managed to hit the target just three times.
Arsenal’s interest in Isak has been reported in the past, but Newcastle appear determined to secure the 24-year-old’s long-term future. His current contract runs until 2028, and the Magpies are reportedly planning a bumper extension to ward off potential suitors.
Isak himself has hinted at his commitment to the Tyneside project, further complicating any prospect of Arsenal swooping in.
The Gunners’ failure to address their striker shortage has been a lingering issue. While signing a top-tier forward is no easy task, the absence of a reliable No. 9 continues to hold Arsenal back in their pursuit of silverware.
Players like Isak represent the type of transformative talent Arsenal must prioritise if they are to progress from perennial contenders to title winners.
For now, Newcastle and Isak can look forward to the Carabao Cup final, where they will have the chance to secure domestic silverware for the first time since 1955. For Arsenal, the defeat should serve as yet another a wake-up call.
