Dubai: Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the semifinals of the FIFA Club World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich on Saturday, but the win was overshadowed by a horrific injury to Bayern’s Jamal Musiala.

Desire Doue opened the scoring in the 78th minute, finishing off a quick counterattack after Joao Neves dispossessed Harry Kane near midfield. Neves sprinted forward, received a return pass, and set up Doue just outside the box. The 22-year-old’s low left-footed strike beat Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and tucked inside the right post.

Despite going down to nine men late in the match — following red cards to Willian Pacho for a reckless challenge and Lucas Hernández for an elbow — PSG held firm. Ousmane Dembele added a second goal deep into stoppage time, capitalising on Bayern’s all-out push for an equaliser. The win sends the French giants into Wednesday’s semifinal in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where they’ll face the winner of Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund.

PSG entered the tournament fresh off their historic 5-0 Champions League final triumph over Inter Milan five weeks ago and looked poised to add more silverware. But the result was marred by a devastating moment just before halftime.

In stoppage time of the first half, Bayern midfielder Jamal Musiala chased a loose ball near the end line. PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma rushed out to collect it but collided violently with Musiala’s left ankle. The 22-year-old German immediately crumpled to the ground, his ankle appearing to be cleanly broken.

Disallowed goals and VAR drama

Donnarumma initially walked away with the ball but fell to his knees in distress when he realised the severity of the injury. Medical staff quickly brought out a stretcher, and Musiala was taken off the field as players from both teams looked on in stunned silence. Donnarumma, visibly shaken, was booed throughout the second half by Bayern fans each time he touched the ball.

Bayern had two goals ruled out for offside, including a header by Harry Kane, and were awarded a penalty in the final moments — only for it to be overturned after a VAR review.
