Capello says women officials are competent

They make the right calls — England manager

Last updated:

London: Fabio Capello has added his voice to the Sky Sports sexism scandal, claiming his experience of women officials in football has always been positive.

The England manager was at the Wolves versus Liverpool game on Saturday when Sian Massey became the subject of the inappropriate exchange that led to the sacking of Andy Gray.

Capello's comments will increase the pressure on Gray's co-presenter Richard Keys, who last night continued to cling to his job.

Capello said: "I was at the Wolves game and I played a lot of games with women linesmen.

"Every time they were focused and they made the correct decisions".

"The women linesmen are good," Capello said.

Kelly Simmons MBE, the FA's head of National Game said: "County associations have been telling me that they've been inundated by women wanting to get into refereeing".

"It just goes to show what a fantastic role model Sian is. I can't imagine what pressure she's under".
