New York: Indian chess Grandmaster Koneru Humpy won the 2024 FIDE Women's World Rapid Championship in New York, defeating Indonesia's Irene Sukandar with the black pieces in the final round.
This marks Humpy’s second world rapid title, her first victory coming in 2019. She becomes the second player after China's Ju Wenjun to win multiple women's world rapid titles.
Humpy secured the championship with a score of 8.5/11, showcasing resilience after losing her first-round match. She shared a joint lead with fellow Indian Grandmaster Harika Dronavalli entering the final round. While Harika settled for a draw against China's Tan Zhongyi, Humpy delivered a stellar performance to claim the title.
Speaking after her victory, Humpy expressed her delight, calling it a significant moment for Indian chess. "This win is very special and boosts my confidence to work on chess again. I didn’t expect to win, especially after my tough start," she told FIDE.
Indian leaders and officials celebrated Humpy’s triumph. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju hailed her victory as a moment of national pride, writing on X, "Your 2024 FIDE Women’s World Rapid Championship win redefines excellence and resilience. India celebrates your inspiration to millions!"
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu called her win the culmination of a phenomenal year for Indian chess, while Minister Nara Lokesh praised her grit and determination. Former Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy congratulated Humpy, calling her victory a testament to her excellence and determination.
Humpy’s journey in rapid chess has been marked by consistent excellence. She previously finished second in the 2023 FIDE World Rapid Championship and in 2012. Her victory adds another feather to India’s growing chess prowess, coming in a year where Indian players have achieved global recognition.
