Dubai: It’s the same opponent, the same stage — and the same headache.

Every time India have flirted with glory in the last year, Travis Head has stood in the way. His centuries derailed India’s dreams in two ICC finals, and when he walked out to bat against Afghanistan last week, he looked like a man ready to break more hearts. On Tuesday, he’s coming for India — again.

Familiar conditions, familiar threat

Head will face India in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy on Tuesday at the Ring of Fire, a venue where the dry surface could offer conditions similar to Ahmedabad — a final India would rather forget. With dew likely to play a role in the second session, the parallels with that night will only add to India’s anxiety.

India come into the knockout clash with a clean record, having won all three of their group games. Even in the World Cup, India were unbeaten — until they ran into Head in the final.

Will history repeat itself?

Smith backs Head to deliver

“There’s pressure every time you play in a big game, but Travis has stood up in many of those in the past, and he looked in great touch the other night against Afghanistan,” captain Steve Smith told the media on the eve of the semi-final.

“I’m sure he’s going to be looking to come out here and play the same way he’s played for a long time with good intent, good aggression, and, yeah, hopefully, he can get away in that powerplay and get us off to a nice start.”

More than just a batter

Head’s threat isn’t limited to the bat. His off-spin has been underused but quietly effective, especially in clutch moments. His dismissal of Rishabh Pant in the Melbourne Test earlier this year proved decisive, and India will be wary of him sneaking in a few overs if conditions favour spin.

Head's centuries against India in finals

WTC Final 2023 (Oval) 163 174 Australia won by 209 runs

World Cup Final 2023 (Ahmedabad) 137 120 Australia won by 6 wickets

Australia will be banking on Head to set the tempo at the top, especially with the rough pitch expected to favour India’s spinners during the middle overs.

India’s Headache

For India, the equation is simple — stop Head, and half the job is done. Mohammed Shami will be the key, with the in-form pacer expected to take the new ball and target Head’s tendency to play on the up early in his innings.

Remove him early, and India might finally get the Head-start they have been craving.
