Dubai Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, long admired for his elegant strokeplay and leadership of one of cricket’s most formidable teams, took on an unexpected role recently — that of a water boy for his son.

During a Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 net session, Ponting was spotted supporting his son, Fletcher William, who was playing in the nets for the Washington Freedom — the same team Ponting currently coaches.

With kit bag in hand, young Fletcher took to the nets and immediately caught the eye of onlookers with his timing and technique. Glenn Maxwell, lending a hand, provided throwdowns, while Ponting watched closely from the sidelines, offering advice and encouragement.

Adding to the heartwarming scene, Ponting was seen carrying drinks for Fletcher, prompting smiles from fans who were thrilled to witness the special father-son moment. Many left hopeful that Fletcher might one day follow in his legendary father’s footsteps.

On the field, the Washington Freedom continue their strong run in the MLC 2025 season. They recently pulled off a dramatic last-ball, five-wicket win over the Los Angeles Knight Riders in Dallas. The victory pushed Freedom past the Texas Super Kings into second place on the table, inching them closer to a playoff spot.

For Ponting, it’s been a standout season as head coach. Earlier in the year, he led the Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final, narrowly losing by six runs to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. With MLC silverware now in sight, Ponting will be eager to finish the job and lift the championship with Washington Freedom.
