Dubai: Pakistan’s debutant off spinner Bilal Asif’s deadly six-wicket spell and accurate pacer Mohammad Abbas’s four-wicket haul destroyed Australia’s first innings on the third day of the first Test match at the Dubai International Stadium. It was a spectacular display from two little-known bowlers. They shared all 10 wickets between them to bowl Australia out for 202 in 83.3 overs and give Pakistan a first innings lead of 280 runs.

Thirty-three-year-old Asif bagged six for 36 from his 21.3 overs while Abbas produced figures of 4 for 29 from his 19 overs.

Refusing to enforce the follow on, Pakistan lost the wickets of opener Mohammad Hafeez for 17, nightwatchman Asif for a duck and Azhar Ali for 4 in the second innings to end the day at 45 for 3 and lead by 325 runs.

Australia lost 10 wickets for just 60 runs after their openers Usman Khawaja and debutant Aaron Finch had put on 142 runs. Pakistan-born Khawaja top scored with 85 runs off 175 balls hitting eight boundaries. It was his best score in Asia going past his previous best of 26 runs scored against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2011. Finch scored 62 off 61 balls with five boundaries and a six.

Starting the day from 30 for no loss in 13 overs, Khawaja escaped being stumped in the 17th over. Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmad missed Khawaja, who went for a flick at his score on 17 to an Yasir Shah’s delivery, which also went for four byes.

Finch got the first boundary of the day off Abbas through the fine leg. Khawaja played his first confident shot when he hit Wahab Riaz square behind point for a boundary. Finch also hit Shah over mid-on for a six as the pair announcing that the pair is in full control.

The opening pair recorded their century partnership in 202 balls with Finch reaching the half century mark first off 95 balls followed by Khawaja, who too reached his 50, in 110 balls. At lunch, Australia were 137 for no loss trailing by 345 runs.

After lunch, Riaz bowled fast around 140kph but it was Abbas, who was bowling at around 130kph that gave Pakistan the breakthrough. After the opening pair had put on 142 in 51.4 overs, Australia lost their first wicket when Finch drove Abbas into the hands of Asad Shafiq at silly mid-on.

Next man Shaun Marsh scored only seven runs lasting 26 balls before giving debutant off spinner Asif his maiden Test wicket. Marsh, going for a drive away from his body, edged to Shafiq at slip. Asif also picked the prize wicket of Khawaja too having him caught by Imam for 85. His knock off 175 balls contained eight boundaries.

Yasir could have had the wicket of Mitchell Marsh at his score on three had he not dropped an easy return catch. Debutant Travis Head wasn’t lucky as Asif, who hit the rough on the wicket, had Head caught by Harris Sohail at gully for a duck. Worse was to follow for Australia as he had debutant Marnus Labuschagne push forward in defence and edge to his pad and got caught by Imam Ul Haq for another duck.

Australia skipper Tim Paine joined Marsh after seeing his team collapse from 142 for no loss to 171 for 5.

They went in for a tea break still trailing by 302 runs with having to score another 103 runs more to avoid the follow on. For Pakistan it was a great second sessions taking five wickets for 43 runs from the 27 overs bowled.

In the second over after tea, Abbas trapped Marsh leg before for 12, while Asif picked his fifth wicket by having Paine caught by Imam Ul Haq off pads at short fine leg for 7. Abbas picked his third wicket forcing Starc to edge to wicketkeeper. Asif would have got his sixth wicket had Sarfraz not missed another stumping chance offered by Siddle on 7. Abbas allowed Siddle to add only three more runs before he had him bowled. Asif got his sixth wicket when Nathan Lyon swept to Azhar Ali at square leg.
