In Pictures: Dubai Design Week is back with stunning art installations

‘The Leader’ presented by Kart Group by Khamash 2020. An experimental, interactive 3D installation is showcasing the silhouette of Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at Dubai Design Week. Within the open-air setting of Dubai Design district, the 2020 edition of Dubai Design Week taking place from 9- 14 November, is staging an extensive series of programmes including exhibitions, outdoor installations, talks & workshops and unique retail experiences.

The concept welcomes spectators into the layered cut out panels to discover the light and shadows the make up the journey of leadership. His highness’ words are written in Acrylic cut letters to provide inspiration to every visitor. Styrofoam cube was carved internally in 7 levels to create the intended shape with the finish exterior created with insulation plaster.

Marking the entrance to Dubai Design Week at Dubai Design District (d3), the ‘Nebula’ installation by Wilson Associates’ Dubai studio based in d3 consists of a stage-inspired setting where visitors are invited to walk inside from beneath the structure and find multiple sphere-like, reflective surfaces in the centre that create an overhead kaleidoscope-effect of facial reflections.

Presented by Department for International Trade (UK), ‘Design is GREAT: From the UK to the UAE’ is a celebration of the historic cultural ties between the two nations, lensed through a showcase of a multibrand showcase of British design excellence.

Featuring a diverse selection of designers that cover a range of expertise and know-how that has established the UK as a leading design destination, the showcase will present work by acclaimed designers such as Tom Faulkner, David Harber and Julian Chichester, all with an enviable reputation for contemporary design that is inspired by tradition and British artisanal techniques.

‘Deterministic Path’ designed by Iman Ibrahim and Mahmoud Diaa. A design concept adapting to physical distancing with focus on encouraging social intervention with safe distancing, the installation consists of a modular design grid, created for flexibility and possibility for repurposing.

Exploring materiality, Agata Kurzela studio through this installation prepared in collaboration with Milad Marble Dubai, encourage designers and clients alike to rediscover stone as a dynamic material.

Visitors look at ‘Reflections of Swiss Innovation’ presented by the Embassy of Switzerland to the UAE and Bahrain. Conceived as a teaser one year before Expo 2020 Dubai, the ‘ Reflection of the Swiss Innovation’ exhibition will present creative Swiss solutions to global changes, during the Dubai Design Week in Dubai Design District in Dubai.

‘Reflections of Swiss Innovation’ presented by the Embassy of Switzerland to the UAE and Bahrain. Alongside an installation offering a snapshot of what to expect for and highlighting the design elements of the Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai next year, the exhibition will include a project by the innovation lab HyperAktiv.li titled ‘BYOM (Bring Your Own Mask)’, which gives young Swiss designers a platform to rethink protective masks; an item that now accompanies our daily lives.

‘ABWAB: Fata Morgana’, designed by Hozan Zangana. This year’s Abwab commission has been awarded to Iraqi Designer Hozan Zangana in collaboration with Generous Studios and Woodcast at Dubai Design Week.

People pass by ‘NACRE’ designed by HagenHinderdael X Concreative. A cross-disciplinary between London-based Duo HagenHinderdael and Concreative, the UAEs first Industrial concrete 3D-printing company, NACRE is constructed following research into the structure of the mother of pearl, which is known for its extraordinary strength and flexibility derived from its interlocking and rotated hexagonal platelets, at Dubai Design Week in Dubai Design District in Dubai.

Visitors take pictures with ‘Desert Ribbons’ designed by Bishoy Girgis & Tania Ursomorazi. An urban public seating and spatial design concept ‘Desert Ribbons’ explores different ‘seated’ positions of the body and a variety of social situations that seating can create while the design references regional nature, such as the topography of desert dunes, the desert camel, and the ghaf tree, in its concept, form, and materiality.
