UAE: 10 time-travel movies or series perfect for the weekend

Time-travel is always a fascinating subject – more so in movies where non-liniear narratives can add much to the storyline. Here’s a look at 10 films, like ‘Back to the Future’ (pictured), and series (‘Dark’) that sift through the sands of time – available for streaming in the UAE.

Mirage. The Spanish movie, out now on Netflix, sees a woman able to communicate with a boy from the past. In saving him, she creates an alternate reality where her life has been turned topsy-turvy. How far will she go to return to her old truth?

12 Monkeys. His mission – to change the past, to save the future, to stop a plague from destroying nearly all of humanity. The only problem – when he goes back in time, no one believes him.

Back to the Future. A more lighthearted series that deals with time travel, ‘Back to the Future’ sees Marty McFly and Doc race to the past and future in a comedy of errors.

Looper. In the future, time-travel exists, but and the mob uses it to kill people. It sends the target into the past, where a hit man known as a looper lies in wait to finish the job. Looper Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is good at his job, until one day he realizes that the target in front of his gun’s barrel is him.

Somewhere Between. In 1988, a police officer begins tracking a serial killer who resurfaces every nine years. When the killer's crimes defy explanation, it takes over the lawman’s life.

Black Knight. Jamal (Martin Lawrence), an employee of the Medieval World amusement park, suffers a blow to the head and wakes up in 14th Century England – where he finds himself stuck and aiding a knight who is down on his luck.

Dark. Be warned: This German series requires a lot of focus. The three-season time-splicing movie sees tunnels that lead 33 years into the past and 33 years into the future, and the person trying to save the world is also quite probably responsible for destroying it.

Rick and Morty. This series follows the adventures of Rick, a genius alcoholic and careless scientist, and his grandson Morty, a 14 year-old anxious boy. The duo visit alien worlds and hop between past present and future.

Travelers. A team of five travel back in time from a dystopian future – or at least their consciousness does. They must take over humans living in current day and channel events so the apocalyptic future that is theirs seizes to be.
