Irrfan made his Bollywood debut with Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay in 1988. His break through role came in western cinema when British director Asif Kapadia featured him in a low budget film 'The Warrior'. This was shot in India and released in 2002. The film won the Bafta award for the best British film. Subsequently he has been part of many Hollywood projects.

Based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel 'The Namesake', Irrfan played the role of Ashoke Ganguly and Tabu as Ashima Ganguly a young couple from Calcutta, growing into their marriage and life in America, their adopted country.
