Bollywood: Remembering Divya Bharti, late wife of Sajid Nadiadwala, on her 47th birth anniversary

It’s always sad to hear about the passing of a young person; more so if the reason behind the death remains uncertain. One such mysterious end that still baffles people is the death of Divya Bharti nearly 28 years ago at the peak of her stardom.

She was only 19 years old.

Bharti began her career at age 16 as a model before going on to debuting in the Telugu movie industry with ‘Bobbili Raja’ in 1990. Soon she would find herself working with the biggest names in the biz: Venkatesh, Chiranjeevi and Mohan Babu.

Two years later, the star would take on Bollywood, making a debut opposite Sunny Deol in ‘'Vishwatma'. By the time she turned 19, she had already done 14 films.

Her movie credits include 'Deewana', for which she won a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut in 1993, 'Shatranj', 'Dil Hi Toh Hai' and 'Dil Aashna Hai'.

She was also married – in secret – to producer Sajid Nadiadwala. This caused quite a stir when the news was made public – at the time of her nuptials, on May 10, 1992, she had been only 18 years old. The couple met on the sets of 'Shola Aur Shabnam'.

The thing is, it was not only a surprise to her fans, it came as a shock to her parents as well – they weren’t at the wedding and didn’t know about it for months afterward. She lived with them, meeting Nadiadwala on the sly until Diwali that year when they told her parents.

Unfortunately for the new bride, she would die within months. Tragedy struck the young couple 10 months after they had gotten married.

It was also only a week after her last movie came out, ‘'Kshatriya’.
