Weekend watchlist: 11 TV shows and movies to check out

‘King Richard’ (UAE Cinemas): Starring Will Smith as Richard Williams, father to tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams, the movie follows the trials and tribulations of the family on the road to success. Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons.

‘Bunty Aur Babli 2’ (UAE Cinemas): The con is on once again as Rani Mukerji returns as the lovable Babli, only this time, with a new Bunty in the form of Saif Ali Khan. It’s a battle between the old and new with another conniving couple, in the form of Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh, who are entering the game using the street creds of the original. With different generations against each other, who will outwit the other in this game of mastery?

‘Kurup’ (UAE Cinemas): If you’ve been hearing all about ‘Kurup’ these last week or so, then here’s your chance to satiate your curiosity. While the movie has already released in Malayalam and Tamil languages in the UAE, the Hindi version of the movie has finally dropped. Catch Dulquer Salmaan do what he does best, put on an award-winning act, only this time as a consummate criminal who sets out to find a man of similar appearance to falsify his own death and claim insurance money.

‘Dangerous’ (UAE Cinemas): With an all-star cast that features Mel Gibson, Scott Eastwood and Tyrese Gibson, the action thriller follows a reformed sociopath who heads to a remote island after the death of his brother. But the place soon falls under siege from a deadly gang of mercenaries. Forced to fend for himself, he discovers their role in his brother’s demise and sets off on a relentless quest for vengeance.

‘The Great’ Season 2 (OSN): With the new season kicking off on Friday, Catherine, Orlo and Velementov begin their rule of Russia but unexpected obstacles appear. Meanwhile, Peter is on a journey of self-improvement under house arrest but convinces Catherine to let him attend her coronation and hand over his crown.

‘The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star’ (Netflix): It’s Christmas season once again on Netflix and how else to celebrate than watching the third instalment of ‘The Princess Switch’, which drops Thursday. Vanessa Hudgens plays three characters in the holiday franchise. A Christmas relic is stolen, royal look-alikes Margaret and Stacy turn to audacious doppelgänger Fiona -- and her dashing ex -- for help.

‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ (Netfilx): Out Friday, this musical is directed by the talented Lin Manuel-Miranda and stars Andrew Garfield in the lead as Jonathan Larson, the composer and lyricist of ‘Rent’. At the verge of turning 30, he is coming to terms with his current position in life and where his genius will take him.

‘The Wheel of Time’ (Amazon Prime Video): Premiering on Friday, Robert Jordan’s fantasy universe comes to life with Rosamund Pike starring as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world or ultimately destroy it.

‘La Casa De Papal’ (‘Money Heist’, on Netflix): With a cult following that few shows can match, the second part of the fifth and final season of ‘La Casa De Papal’ or ‘Money Heist’ drops on Netflix next month. Catch up on the season before the action returns for one last time.

‘Chehre’ (Amazon Prime Video): Imagine stumbling onto a house in the middle of nowhere during a snowstorm after your car has shut down. You are welcomed by warm hosts, food and drink. And then you are put on trial for murder. The house has everything – two retired lawyers; one for and the other against; a judge, and a hangman. Let the games begin.

Red Notice (Netflix): In this hilarious caper that sees the Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Ryan Reynolds pair up to beat The Bishop (played by Gal Gadot), there are fight scenes and funny dialogues and priceless artefacts.
