Weekend watchlist: 10 TV shows and movies to check out

‘The Matrix Resurrections’ (UAE cinemas): The iconic film franchise is back and Mr Anderson, aka Neo, has difficult choices to make again. He will have to decide to follow the white rabbit like he did before and this time the Matrix is stronger than ever.

‘Silent Night’ (UAE cinemas): Mix a bit of horror with the festive spirit and this is what you get. A couple invites their friends for Christmas dinner at their home in the English countryside. They enjoy getting back together like the old times but right outside, the world is facing impending doom and chances of surviving the holidays are bleak.

‘Emily in Paris’ (Netflix): Season two of the hit series is now here and sees US expat Emily get better at navigating Paris and her new life there. The first season ended with her stumbling into a love triangle with her neighbour and her friend. But now Emily is ready to put all her focus on her job as a marketing exec.

‘The Silent Sea’ (Netflix): This South Korean series is set in a future Earth that has undergone desertification. Members of a special team are sent to get samples from an abandoned top secret research facility on the moon in a perilous 24-hour mission.

‘Don’t Look Up’ (Netflix): Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence star in this drama about two astronomers who realise that a comet orbiting within the solar system is heading straight to Earth. However, no one cares about the impending destruction of the world as we know it so they have to go on a media tour to warn mankind.

'83' (UAE cinemas): If you are in the mood for an endearing sports film that’s all heart, then 83 ticks that box splendidly. Actor Ranveer Singh, who plays the iconic former Indian captain Kapil Dev, delivers the proverbial captain’s knock in this stirring film. He’s spot on as Kapil Dev and his squad of lovable underdogs are equally good. Keep your tissues nearby, as this is a tear-jerker. The climax of this underdog team courting World Cup glory will make you smile and cheer from the sidelines.

'Meow' (UAE cinemas): This adorable family drama, directed by Lal Jose and starring Mamta Mohandas and Soubin, was shot in the UAE and is a tale about an ordinary man going through a personal crisis. Every Malayali expatriate is likely to feel connected to this film. His joys and sorrow seems incredibly close to home. And director Lal Jose knows a thing or two about making compelling films about ordinary folks. He makes it look extraordinary and this is no different.

'Antim' (Zee5): Bollywood actor Salman Khan turns into a stoic activist in ‘Antim: The Final Truth’, out on Zee5 on December 24. Khan plays a scrupulous Sikh cop Rajveer Singh who makes being woke his biggest currency in this entertainer. The actor takes one for the Indian farmers’ team here and the entire crew of this film is tilling hard to grow something substantial here. Watch out for Aayush Sharma’s performance as a young man hardened by the world of crime and grime.

'Decoupled' (Netflix): This is a series about a dysfunctional married couple (Madhavan and Surveen Chawla) navigating the tricky terrain of divorce and uncoupling. Some of the jokes may be crass and sexist, but there are bits that truly enjoyable. Directed by Hardik Mehta and written by Manu Joseph, the series is enjoyable despite weak writing.

'Atrangi Re' (UAE cinemas): Directed by Aanand L Rai, this star-studded film with Sara Ali Khan, Dhanush, and Akshay Kumar, is being touted as a love triangle that can get murky and complex. A Bihari girl (Khan) gets entangled with a Tamil boy, played by Dhanush, but it gets complicated when her purported lover Akshay Kumar -- a magician -- enters the scene. Love is messy and this film subscribes to that sentiment wonderfully.
