Pictures: The Slumdog Millionaire actor Irrfan Khan's incredible Hollywood journey

Irrfan made his Bollywood debut with Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay in 1988. His break through role came in western cinema when British director Asif Kapadia featured him in a low budget film 'The Warrior'. This was shot in India and released in 2002. The film won the Bafta award for the best British film. Subsequently he has been part of many Hollywood projects.

The Great Khan, as his legions of fans call him acted in the film Namesake (2006) directed by Mira Nair. Based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel 'The Namesake', Irrfan played the role of Ashoke Ganguly and Tabu as Ashima Ganguly a young couple from Calcutta, growing into their marriage and life in America, their adopted country.

He played the role of a Karachi Pakistani police chief in ‘A Mighty Heart’ (2007) with oscar-winning Angelina Jolie. He had our hearts and his growing clout in Hollywood.

The Darjeeling Limited (2008) was an American-comedy drama that featured Owen Wilson and Adrien Brody in lead roles. Khan played the role of their father. The movie narrates the story of three brothers who travel through India in trains, hoping to reconnect with one another subsequent to their fathers death.

Irrfan khan tasted Hollywood success in the film Oscar winning Slumdog millionaire( 2008). He played the role of an inspector and put India on the world cinema map.

He also acted in Mira Nair’s segment of 'New York, I Love You' (2010). An Indian diamond seller and a bride-to-be, academy Award nominee Natalie Portman, experience an intimate connection in the middle of a tense diamond negotiation. This film, shot in Manhattan’s Midtown Diamond District is directed by Mira Nair.

The actor aimed for roles that transcend boundaries of race, religion and country. He played the pivotal role of Dr. Ratha in the big-budget Hollywood film The Amazing Spider-Man(2012).

His performance in the BAFTA Award nominated romance The Lunchbox (2013) earned him universal acclaim by the critics and audiences. It was a feel good movie in which he played an accountant who strikes up a letter-writing romance with unhappy housewife Nimrat Kaur.

Irrfan starred in the Hollywood blockbuster, Jurassic World (2015). He played the ill-fated, billionaire owner of the dinosaur park.

The late actor also worked with Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones in Hollywood action film, Inferno(2016), based on Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series of novels. He played the role of Harry Sims. He was one of the few Indian actors who earned the chance to showcase his acting to a global audience.

He also starred in Puzzle (2018) a sports movie, an intimate domestic drama about a housewife played by Kelly Macdonald who discovers that her passion for completing jigsaw puzzles. Irrfan Khan played the role of her competitive partner in puzzling and her eventual romantic interest.

In Life of Pie (2012) Irfan played the character of adult Pi Patel. In the film he says ' I suppose in the end the whole of life becomes an act of letting go but what always hurts the most is not taking a moment to say good bye'. Good Bye Irfan, we will miss u.
