From Deepika Padukone to Katrina Kaif, these Bollywood stars were born abroad

They may be proficient in Indian languages and prolific on screen, but there are some stars who began their journey far from India’s shores. Here’s a look at some top celebs from Katrina Kaif (left) to Deepika Padukone (pictured), who were born abroad.

First up, ‘Chhapaak’ actress Deepika Padukone. The beauty queen-turned-movie star was born in Copenhagen because her also famous father, badminton star Prakash Padukone, was mid training session in the Danish capital and the family had relocated during this time. After she was born however, the Padukones returned to India. The actor, who made her debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Om Shanti Om’, went on to become Bollywood’s highest-paid actress and has even been part of a Hollywood blockbuster, ‘XXX: Return of Xander Cage.’ Living the Bollywood dream? We think so.

This one’s got a thick accent and had to take many, many lessons in Hindi before she got there, but Katrina Kaif can now safely be called a bankable actor. The ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ actress was born in Hong Kong to a Kashmiri dad and British mum. Her early years saw her live in places including Hawaii and London. Nowadays, however, she’s firmly rooted to Mumbai.

Talented ‘Gully Boy’ actress Alia Bhatt was born in London and holds a British passport. This hasn’t stopped her from taking on powerful roles or establishing herself in the fraternity however.

Sunny Leone hails from Canada and was a former adult movie actress there. Since moving to India however, she’s done things differently. She got into reality TV show ‘Bigg Boss’ which led her to films such as ‘Jism 2’ and ‘Ragini MMS 2’. Most recently, she was seen in a ‘Raees’ song.

Sarah Jane Dias lived in Muscat, Oman, for years until she moved to India. She won Femina Miss India 2007 and went on be work in films such as ‘Dhobi Ghat.’

Amy Jackson is a multi-talented UK-born actor. The ‘Ek Tha Deewana’ star kicked off her career as a British model and performer and went on to do movies in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

This Sri Lankan star also has a Middle East connect. Jacqueline Fernandez’ family moved to Bahrain when she was very young and lived there for many years. Later, she would turn her interested to modelling, head to India and land a role in the Hindi movie ‘Aladin’. And the rest, as they say, is history.

‘Rockstar’ debutante Nargis Fakhri is half Czech and half Pakistani. She was born and raised in New York.
