9 Hollywood movies to watch this Valentine’s Day

Sometimes Valentine’s Day is about staying home and binge-watching movies together. Here’s our compilation of the best romantic movies to watch this Valentine’s Day. Most of them are available on streaming platforms, so grab some popcorn, a blanket and celebrate love from the comfort of your couch.

Your Place or Mine: If you decide to settle in and watch to see the sparks fly between Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, you'll be initially disappointed. They're not in the same room until the last 12 minutes. The premise of this particular Netflix rom-com is two old friends switching homes for a week and snapping each other out of their ruts.

Love actually: This evergreen movie features ten stories focused on different kinds of love set five weeks before Christmas. All of them help reach different conclusions about love on Christmas Day. The stories are linked, with most of the characters being related to one or more of the others. Though there are so many characters and plots involved, this movie is seamless in execution and a must-watch for a romantic screening.

No Strings attached: Kutcher plays a struggling television writer who enters into a friends-with-benefits relationship with his best friend, played by Natalie Portman (not to be confused with Friends With Benefits, which stars Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake in a similarly themed story).

Notting Hill: Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant charm their way into our hearts as a couple from very different backgrounds who find themselves caught up in love. Roberts plays Anna, a successful American star who falls in love with a British bookseller, played by Grant. This is one that we never get tired of watching.

Friends with Benefits: Dylan (Timberlake) is a hugely sought after blogger from Los Angeles visiting New York, after being talent scouted by Jamie (Kunis). Initially hesitant about moving to the Big Apple, Jamie convinces him to cross the country and pretty soon becomes his go-to girl accompanying him to dinners, clubs and parties. Both single, one night, the pair decide to take their friendship up a notch… adding ‘benefits'.

‘Dirty Dancing’: This is a summer vacation flick like no other! Set in 1963, Frances (Jennifer Grey) and her family go on holiday to a stunning resort. While exploring the grounds, she comes across the staff — including dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) — at a sultry party. Soon a forbidden love blooms between the two, with lots of dancing in between.

Something borrowed: Kate Hudson stars in the romantic comedy Something Borrowed. Based on author Emily Giffin's best-selling novel of the same name, the film is about two best friends (Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin) whose friendship is tested when one falls for the other's fiance.

Serendipity: What’s not to love here — it’s Christmas in New York with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale to add to the charm. Jonathan and Sara are strangers whose paths cross in New York one snowy day and sparks fly. Leaving their union to fate, Sara throws out their phone numbers into the universe to see whether their paths will cross again. Years later, the duo set out to find each other and nudge the hand of fate. This is a film for all seasons.

Marry Me: Who knew that a Jennifer Lopez - Owen Wilson romantic comedy is going to save the world. The fake relationship trope is chef’s kiss and their chemistry is off the charts – on the next level, to be fair. If you haven’t seen the trailer, it’s about a pop star (played by none other than Lopez herself) who marries a man (played by Wilson) in the audience at her concert after catching her famous fiancé cheating on her.
