The common man suffers most

Gulf News recently reported on the high court decision in India to defer a hearing on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) (‘Vyapam deaths: Court defers hearing’, Gulf News, July 9). The probe into the Vyapam scam has become more sensitive because of the deaths. Whatever be the explanation from the Chief Minister, this scam is a really big one from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. All parties are corrupt and the degree only varies. One scam goes; another scam is waiting for the Opposition parties to agitate over. The Chief Minister should speed up this burning issue and bring out the real truth so that the guilty can be punished. Education is an area that should not be interfered with as it will affect the quality of education. It’s a sad state of affairs going on and the common man is the one who suffers most because of the economy being affected with corruption and inflation.

Honoured to be included

Please remember that not all non-Muslims have negative feelings towards British Muslims (‘Living nightmare for British Muslims’, Gulf News, July 8)! Yes, I have seen how Muslims have been judged and treated but, my biggest gripe in all of this is the media frenzy, spreading lies, half-lies, fuelling a mistrust amongst communities across the country.

I cannot abide the rise in racial discrimination and attacks in the UK! I’m happy to say that I came over to the UAE two years ago to teach history and it has been the best thing I have ever done! Living in a Muslim community has been nothing but a wonderful experience; I love culture and I have learnt so much from my Muslim students and because I am naturally interested, they open up more and explain their religion and culture. This makes me feel privileged!

Shocking news calls for strict rules

I refer to the report of concern expressed in Chennai, India over videos of children drinking (‘PMK, MDMK express concern over videos of children drinking’, Gulf News, July 9). The incident is indeed shocking. It clearly proves free accessibility to alcohol and how children are tempted to consume even without the support of elders.

This incident calls for control in the distribution of alcohol and more restrictions must be imposed for its sale and consumption. Children should be strictly barred from its accessibility.

It caught my attention on several occasions seeing people lined up in large queues in the early morning to purchase alcohol. The beverage shops are placed in public places facing the road with no proper set timing for its operations. It is high time some strict rules are implemented.

There are solutions

Rest in peace to the 15-year-old Filipina celebrity who committed suicide (‘Teen Philippine actress Julia Buencamino dies’, Gulf News, July 9). Depression is not good in any matter or for person. It kills so fast. Try to avoid this mental illness by spotting the signs. Share your problems with God and don’t blame yourself. God is the one who gives us problems to test us and we need to trust that He is responsible to solve them. Anyway, suicide is a step you can’t take back.

She was so young

I’ve heard of people having depression and that it only comes when you are mentally stressed. So, what stress did she have to go through to be depressed at the age of 15!

It can happen to anyone

No, Mr Ammar Khan, depression can occur at any age. It has been found in children at very young ages – much younger than her, if I’m recalling correctly.

Sick sense of humour

A Turkish flight was forced to make an emergency landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India to evacuate its 148 passengers over a bomb threat that was seen on the toilet mirror (‘Turkish Airlines plane diverted to India over a bomb threat’, Gulf News, July 7). After making a safe landing, the ill-fated plane was moved immediately to the security zone of the airport for further investigation. Later the local media reported that it was a fake threat. It seems someone is getting satisfaction from making the innocent passengers frightened. But, they do not realise that they are playing with fire. Taking advantage and mocking such issues increases the chances for something awful to happen. Last March, another Turkish flight made a similar emergency landing in Morocco after crew members found a written note in the toilet.

UN not fulfilling duty

The article written by Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Ban Ki Moon in Gulf News was very interesting (‘Towards a safer, sustainable future’, Gulf News, June 29). The UN has done a lot for the welfare of the human beings since its inception. But, it could not eliminate war from this globe, which was the main purpose of its establishment. Human beings are still suffering on account of wars. Lives are devastated and ruined and millions of people are displaced. The main reason for this failure is not taking the required steps to stop the conflicts that ultimately result in wars.

At least now, the UN and other international agencies should make it a point to stem the conflicts as they arise and not wait till they culminate into wars. They should persuade the countries involved in the conflicts to take the initiatives for peace and stop them from waging wars. The wars that are already raging in this world must be put to an end at any cost.

Drivers are careful before iftar

I absolutely do not agree with the operating officer’s view in this article about the effects of fasting and driving (‘Community Report Video: The effects of fasting on driving’, Gulf News, July 8). As iftar time comes closer, or during that hour, I have experienced people showing humbleness on the roads. People with fasts cooperate as they drive, give way to others and even leave their rights to let others reach who are in a hurry. Though dehydration is a fact, spiritually all Muslims have the strength to go through it. Even if it’s on the road, during iftar I have seen people helping others on the roads to maintain safe driving.

Fasting really does affect us

This does explain how fasting affects our bodies and our minds. Yes, God has given us strength to overcome long hours of fasting, but we should also have an open mind and really not complain about this. This is correct scientifically. Our blood pressure, sugar levels, hydration and cognitive behaviour is definitely affected by fasting and they do give good tips at the end of the video. In fact, the diet recommended is the one observed by our beloved Prophet Mohammad [PBUH]. One thing that needs correction is the timing before iftar, it is not true that everyone is anxious to get home and is, therefore, reckless. We fast by choice, not by force, and we comply with the choices of others to make a good prosperous living.

Blessing from heaven
