The Dubai Water Canal: A proud moment for all
It was a proud moment for Dubai with the opening of the canal, which is 3.2km and links Business Bay with the Arabian Gulf (‘Facebook live: Dubai celebrates the opening of the much awaited Dubai Water Canal’, Gulf News, November 9). It has turned areas of Dubai like Satwa, Downtown, Zabeel, Oud Metha, Karama and Bur Dubai into one huge island (as they are now completely water locked).

Beautiful addition
I walked the entire length of the canal after the grand opening (‘Dream becomes reality’, Gulf News, November 10). It is such a fantastic development for the people of Dubai. I am so excited to live in a city embracing different forms of transportation and embracing pedestrians and landscaping. My evenings just got more interesting!

Respect the decision
The majority of Americans have spoken and now Donald Trump is the 45th President of the United States. God bless, America (‘Some people are not happy with the US election results’, Gulf News, November 9). Let’s respect the decision that has been made.

Very obnoxious
Why have these Americans so foolishly voted for Trump? It doesn’t matter who wins since it’s the backyard establishment that deal with all issues, but at least not someone so obnoxious.

Joint relations
The UAE and the US is built on friendship and mutual respect. I’m privileged to, just recently, share with the New Yorker a culmination of my tribute to Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the father of the nation. I did spend some quality time in all of the emirates, and thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality.

Bringing back morality
Trump has a mission and he will achieve it (‘An open letter to the 45th president of the US’, Gulf News, November 10). He wants to bring back morality and restore Christian values. He’s got one of the best educations, he’s charismatic and influential. What other qualifications do you need when you compare with the leaders of some other countries

The people have spoken
The days of professional politicians have come to an end and the world will be a happier place in four years’ time! If nothing else, Brexit and Trump have got people interested in what is actually going on in their countries and around the world. It shows that the majority are sick and tired of the same old and have finally had a chance to be heard. This is the majority, so perhaps now the people will take more interest and responsibility in making their communities and countries a better place for all. If the people have a common form of unity, then governments will have to listen to them and perhaps the war mongering and greed of some will be curbed.

A stance against black money
Kudos to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the unprecedented master stroke and a high risk political decision (‘Panic run on ATMs across Delhi after notes scrapped’, Gulf News, November 9). Definitely, it is a game changing effort to take on corruption, black money and protect national security. With this, our prime minister has established beyond a doubt that he means business against both corruption and black money. However, it is really unfortunate that most of the opposition parties, especially the Congress, who continued to preach to end black money, are critical of the action. Of course, how can we expect the party, who failed to even acknowledge the surgical strike by our Armed Forces to toe with the actions of Modi? We are confident that the electorates, as and when they get a chance, would teach them a lesson or two in the near future.

A bold and timely move
The sudden overnight decision by Modi on bank transactions was laudable. It was a bold and timely move taken and it will control black money movement and mounting inflation will be controlled. Black money is the main root cause of people’s living condition and suffering. By curbing this, terror funds will also run dry. A country needs consistency and the welfare of the people needs to be taken seriously. This strike will certainly affect big real estate establishments. After a few months, the middle class and the common man will feel relief to a greater extent. This was the right decision at the appropriate time by the prime minister. Kudos to Modi.

Not a wise decision
Is this decision a bit untimely for the Indian government to undertake (‘Facebook live: As Rs500 and Rs1000 go off the market, Anita Yadav, Senior Director - Global The Markets and Treasury at Emirates NBD shares the repercussion’, Gulf News, November 9)? Wouldn’t it be more effective and less troublesome to the masses if this was introduced once the whole population has come under a banking system? Unlike many others, I don’t think this was a wise decision.

It’s a wonderful move, Ms Mila Ali! We can only expect these types of business decisions that will improve the country by a prime minister like Modi. We won’t have black money or fake currency anymore. Enough is enough.

A trailblazer for cancer research
Professor Umberto Veronesi died at age 91 on Tuesday in Milan, Italy, the place he loved and where he built the Istituto Europeo di Oncologia (the European Institute of Oncology). He was among the first to fight breast cancer. We could say he was a strong conservationist against some of the first opinions to surgically remove cancer from women to preserve normal cells.
During surgical operations he introduced a technique of observing the sentinel lymph nodes, keeping all of them if untouched by the tumour, and using radiotherapy while operating to destroy any affected cells left after surgery. He was a strong believer, as he repeatedly maintained, of the fact that we can cure the person, not the cancer and we do that by talking to patients and by listening to them, always with a reassuring smile.
Since the beginning of his career 50 years ago, he had a strong belief that cancer could be cured until the last days he was working on the DNA modified structures of patients with tumour. He was a great man and a major scientist. Italy and the world are now, from that day, a little bit poorer.
