Dubai: Quick-footed police have recovered Dh7 million stolen by a gang who deceived two brothers who wanted to buy Bitcoin and set a trap for them in an office at Al Al Muraqabbat area.

Dubai police said on Saturday that the two Asian brothers wanted to buy Dh7 million worth of Bitcoins and the gang lured them to the office and assaulted them before stealing the cash and escaping.

The gang of 10 were arrested within 48 hours and the money was recovered thanks to Dubai Police.

Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-In-Chief of Dubai Police, praised his officers’ work to apprehend the gang in a short time despite the fact that the robbers had left no evidence behind.

He said that they managed to identify the mastermind behind the robbery within four hours before arresting the rest of his Asian gang.

Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs at Dubai Police, said the data analysis centre used smart programmes and artificial intelligence technology to trace the gang and helped the officers to arrest them in a record time

“Using AI helped Dubai Police to arrest a Gulf National, who is the head of the gang, and other Asian suspects The information from the data analysis center helped the officers to arrest all gang members," Major General Al Mansouri said.

Details of the case

Lt Colonel Adel Al Joker, Director of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Dubai Police, said that command and control room alerted about an armed robbery in Al Muraqabbat area on Wednesday, April 25.

"The brothers searched randomly in the market to buy Bitcoin. The gang lured them claiming they can sell them Bitcoin," Lt Col Al Joker said.

The head of the gang deceived a commercial shop owner in Al Muraqabbat area, who put an advertisement to sell his office and trade license.

"He told him that he wants to buy his office and the license, and managed to get the key to check the office after 8pm. The gang used the office to lure the two brothers to come to the office to sell them the Bitcoin. The owner of the office was a victim in their criminal plan," he added.

Six members of the gang were waiting for the two brothers inside the office and other three were outside guarding the office.

"They assaulted the two brothers and threatened them before tied their hands and locked them inside the office and escape with the money," Lt Col Al Joker said.

Police identified the Gulf national within four hours and arrested him in a neighbouring emirate. He confessed committing the robbery.

At the same time, police located the locations of the other members in four different emirates and arrested them on the same time and recovered the money.

The suspects referred to public prosecution to finish the investigation.
