If you own an electric vehicle (EV) in Dubai, you can charge it at one of the many charging stations provided by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa). While these stations are accessible to everyone, the process can be made faster and more convenient with an EV Green Charger Card. This card links to your DEWA account, allowing EV charging fees to be added to your monthly utility bill. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

Requirements

To apply for an EV Green Charger Card, you’ll need the following:

  • For individuals:

    • Emirates ID

    • Valid vehicle licence

    • Dewa account

Application steps

  1. Download the DEWA App: Open the app and navigate to the ‘EV Account and Charging Card Management’ section under services. Select ‘Create EV Account’ and log in using your DEWA ID or UAE Pass.

  2. Complete the Application: Enter the required details, such as vehicle information. Pay the security deposit (if applicable) and the card delivery fees. You’ll receive a receipt upon payment.

  3. Submit Your Application: After submission, you’ll receive a confirmation message with a reference number and further instructions. Your DEWA EV account will then be activated, and you’ll receive an acknowledgment message with your account details and EV charging instructions.

  4. Receive Your Card: The EV Green Charger Card will be delivered via courier within three working days of account creation.

You can also apply for the card through the ‘Dubai Now’ app, the DEWA website (dewa.gov.ae), or by visiting a DEWA Customer Care Centre.

Service fees

  • Security Deposit: Dh500

  • Delivery Charges: Dh20

How it works

1. Locate the nearest EV Green Charger station using the DEWA or Dubai Now apps. These platforms provide maps, instructions, and real-time charger status.

2. At the charging station:

  • Scan your EV Green Charger Card to initiate the charging cycle.

  • Plug in the charging cable.

  • When charging is complete, scan your card again to stop the process and unplug the cable.

3. The charging fees will be added to your upcoming Green Bill.

Manage your account

Registered users can access their EV User Dashboard to:

  • Track requests and navigate between multiple EV accounts.

  • View and pay outstanding amounts.

  • Check billing, payment, and charging history.

  • Monitor EV charger consumption graphs.

  • Locate and view the status of nearby EV Green Charger stations.

  • Manage cards and access DEWA Store offers and additional services.

Can you charge without an account?

Yes, DEWA chargers can still be used in ‘Guest Mode’:

  • Scan the QR code at the charging station to initiate the process.

  • Register your details, select your preferred charging duration, and pay the fees.

  • The amount will be held temporarily, and you’ll be charged based on actual consumption.

  • Charging will stop automatically at the selected time limit. A final summary will appear on-screen, and you’ll receive a payment confirmation and tax invoice via email.

EV charging fees in the UAE

As of January 2025, the UAE’s first government-owned EV charging network, UAEV, has introduced standardised tariffs set by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure:

  • DC Chargers: Dh1.20 per kWh (plus VAT)

  • AC Chargers: 0.70 per kWh (plus VAT)

These transparent and standardised fees ensure a consistent experience for EV drivers across the UAE.
