Remember: Bursting firecrackers is not allowed

While the ‘festival of lights’ brings with it lots of colours and delicious food, UAE residents need to ensure that they do not violate any laws by illegally purchasing and bursting firecrackers. The UAE’s judicial and police authorities have regularly raised awareness on the country’s laws against the use of firecrackers, especially before major festivals, in order to ensure public safety and avoid legal accountability.

What does the law say?

Under the Article 3 of the Federal Decree Law No 17 of 2019, the acquisition, possession, transport, carriage, manufacturing, and repair of explosives or explosive devices are prohibited without a regulatory approval.

Under Article 54, any person trading in, importing, exporting, or manufacturing fireworks or getting them into or out of the country without a licence, shall be imprisoned for not less than one year and be fined not less than Dh100,000 or either of the said punishments.

Earlier this year, Dubai Police and Abu Dhabi Police posted reminders before Eid Al Fitr, urging residents to stay away from bursting crackers.

Dubai Police launched a ‘Celebrate Safely’ campaign, to spread awareness, confiscate illegal firecrackers and impose strict punishment on violators.

Abu Dhabi Police, too, called on families to pay attention to the practice of children playing with firecrackers, which may harm them and lead to serious injuries, as well as being vulnerable to the risks of gases emitted from them. The harmful substances in such explosives can harm the respiratory system, especially when it comes to children.
