Ghaleb Darabya spoke to Gulf News about the Executive Education Programme which is aimed at preparing Dubai officials to face the challenges of a fast growing economy.
Gulf News: What are the main activities of the Dubai School of Government?
Darabya: The school aims to promote good governance by enhancing the region's capacity for effective public policy.
Towards this goal, the Dubai School of Government collaborates with international institutions such as Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in its research and training programmes and organises policy forums and conferences to facilitate the exchange of ideas and promote critical debate.
What is the need for such a programme in the UAE?
Public policy challenges in the Arab world are increasingly complex and multi-dimensional. Addressing these challenges effectively requires public sector leaders to integrate knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines.
Dubai focuses on developing effective leadership skills according to the Dubai vision, and seeks to become a model on leadership development in the region.
To help achieve this mission, the school aims to develop future leaders by creating strong capabilities to support research and teaching programmes.
Who can apply for the programme?
The programme provides concise focused courses that target government and non-government leaders seeking to broaden their knowledge of the latest developments in public policy, leadership and management.
The school offers a range of customised and open enrolment programmes through its faculty and in cooperation with international partners.
What are the future plans for the school?
The school focuses on research, especially focusing on women leadership, e-government and innovations in governance.
Starting in 2008, it will begin offering post-graduate academic degree programmes in public policy and public administration.
How does your training prepare people to face their job challenges?
The school's philosophy reflects a commitment to the continual development and delivery of content that is research-based, globally relevant, and responds to the needs of executives and officials, allowing them to deal effectively with current and future public policy and public administration issues.
