There might not be much to disguise on the exterior of this Audi R8 — that explains the few strips of duct tape then — but it’s what’s going on under the sleek body that has us panting.

The supercar has always been quick, but its jerky R Tronic single clutch automated manual has had its share of critics. And rightly so.

Our spy caught up with a pair of 4.2 V8 R8s in the Austrian Alps with an advanced S Tronic seven-speed dual clutch unit. It won’t only stop the annoying back and forth rocking motion your head suffers each time you change gears in the original, but it will also make the car quicker and slightly more economical too.

It’s still early days for the new transmission, but we hope we won’t have to wait too long for it.
