In yoga, we often talk about chakras or plexuses. Chakras form the main centres in the body which regulate the flow of energy throughout the body and mind. Hence it is very important to keep eliminating energy blockages from time to time.

The swadisthana chakra or the sacral chakra is connected to all the problems that arise in the reproductive organs such as menstrual (uterus, ovaries, and cervix), prostate, sacroiliac joint, sexual, menopausal, male and female hormone problems, lower back issues, bladder, uterine fibroid tumours, endometriosis, ovarian cysts and urogenital concerns in general.

The swadisthana chakra is situated in the abdominal area between your pubic bone and your navel, and is also responsible for feelings such as those of stagnation; doubting your intuition; fear of abandonment; not being easily satisfied; inability in relating to others; difficulty in opening up to others; issues with one’s social status and financial security; boundaries in relationships, which ultimately lead to anxiety, depression and stress.

With the help of certain yoga postures we can tackle all these issues, both physical and emotional, by smoothening the energy flow and eliminating the blockages.

Note: Though these postures are easy to do and can be done by all at home, as with all exercise, it’s advisable to consult a doctor before starting them.

ARDHA-SHALABHASANA

This posture is also known as the locust pose and it is one of the 12 basic postures of yoga.

PROCEDURE

1 Lie flat on your stomach with your hands placed by your side — palms facing the ground.

2 Keeping your chin on the mat, inhale and raise your right leg as high as you can, contracting the lower back muscles.

3 Hold this position for 10-30 seconds while breathing normally.

4 Repeat the same with your left leg.

BENEFITS

1 Stimulates the swadisthana chakra.

2 Increases the digestive fire (metabolism).

3 Builds strength in the lower back muscles and increases flexibility of the back.

4 Especially recommended for relieving sciatica and lower back pain.

6 Massages the internal organs.

7 Alleviates symptoms of menopause.

Caution: People suffering from lower back pain should practise this posture under professional guidance.
