Shirshasana (also Sirsasana or Sirshasana) is a posture in which the body is inverted and held upright supported by the forearms, while the crown of the head rests lightly on the floor.

It increases the flow of blood to the brain, particularly the pituitary gland, thus improving memory and concentration. It rejuvenates the body and mind, and regulates the flow of energy.

Shirshsana should be practised under the supervision of a trained professional. People with high blood pressure, heart problems and neck problems should not perform this asana.

Shirshasana

Step 1 Sit in Vajrasana on a yoga mat. Bend forward and place forearms on the mat, keeping elbows in front of knees. Interlock fingers.

Step 2 Place the crown of head between fingers and wrap hands around head to provide firm support.

Step 3 Lift knees and buttocks off the floor and straighten legs to form an inverted “V”.

Step 4 Slowly bring feet as close as possible towards trunk while keeping back straight.

Step 5 Bend knees and gently raise calves. Fold legs so that heels move towards buttocks.

Step 6 Raise knees to vertical position so as to align the torso, thighs and knees.

Step 7 Slowly straighten legs and bring body in line with head and torso.

To return to starting position, slowly bend knees and lower body until toes touch the mat. When you reach kneeling position, gradually return to sitting upright in Vajrasana.
