It’s probably just my own unspoken rule about meeting at a Dubai mall: always decide on the exact entrance, and whether it’s above or below which parking level. Pro tip — if you’re meeting at The Dubai Mall, meet five minutes away at a nearby coffee shop and head in together. Otherwise, you’ll likely spend the first hour just trying to find each other and your conversation is invariably punctuated by, "But I am on the second floor too! I can't see you!"

But that’s just one of many. Here are a few others.

Escalator rules: Stand right, walk left, please and thank you

The best of us forget this. We tend to vibe and not climb, and stay to the right. But the truth is, Tte left lane is for those of us late to dinner, a movie, or existential crisis. Bonus points if you don’t check your phone mid-escalator.

The aquarium isn’t going anywhere

No doubt, the aquarium is always fascinating. But you might always run into somebody blocking the promenade. Or many more.

Sigh, that stingray has more freedom to move than the people behind you.

The food court battles for chairs and tables

It’s time for lunch! your shawarma is ready, your tray is trembling, and yet,  there are no tables in sight. Why? Probably, because a group of people “reserved” one 20 minutes ago.

Mall etiquette 101: don’t occupy if you haven’t ordered. You’ will avoid death stares and maybe even make a friend.

Respect the lost, we are many

Ah yes, sometimes those who wander are indeed lost. The truth is, Dubai mall layouts are designed like a maze. Take a photo of the parking level. Use the map. Don’t be proud. Even Dubai residents still ask for directions to The Cheesecake Factory.

The TikToks are lovely, but let’s not do it in the middle of the aisle

This one’s for the TikTok creators of all ages: Your dance is on point, the lighting is perfect,  but the middle of a busy mall walkway might not be the best stage. Especially not when someone’s rushing to Carrefour with a toddler in tow. Dubai malls have plenty of open atriums and quieter corners that are perfect for filming. Create all you want — just be mindful of the traffic flow around you.

Sample sparingly, not strategically

Yes, the free chocolate truffle is delightful. It’s the best thing about Dubai malls; you will find one shop at every corner.  But circling back to the same stand three times in a new hat and glasses? Bold. Respect the sampling. It’s a gift, not a buffet.

Personal space is a luxury, respect it

Malls get crowded — especially on weekends. But that doesn’t mean we abandon personal boundaries. No need to hover one inch behind someone in line. And if your shopping bag hits someone for the third time, it’s time to re-strategize your carrying technique.

Avoid loud conversations

Yes, your phone call might be important, just try to keep the volume a touch lower. And if you’re catching up on last night’s brunch drama, perhaps save it for a quieter spot — especially when passing by the prayer room or the fine jewellery section. And no speaker phones!

For children

Children bring joy and energy to the mall, and their excitement is usually, part of what makes the experience special. That said, helping little ones move calmly and safely through busy walkways ensures everyone can enjoy their visit comfortably. Encouraging gentle voices and mindful walking helps create a pleasant atmosphere for families and other shoppers alike.
