Advertisement cards creating a nuisance

Reader advises that companies switch to online advertising

Advertisement cards creating a nuisance

Sharjah

I would like to raise concerns over illegal advertisements, which create a nuisance. A few days ago, I visited a restaurant in the Al Karama area of Dubai. It was about 5pm and my father parked the car in a paid parking area. As I climbed out of the car, I was shocked to see visiting cards strewn all across the parking lot (as seen in photograph).

On close observation, I found that the advertisement cards were placed on the windows of the parked cars, too. On some of the cars, about five different advertisement cards were placed. Not only was all this tainting the beauty of the surrounding area, but was adding to environmental pollution in the form of waste of paper.

In today’s world, we should be focusing on saving paper and in turn, saving trees. I am sure that a majority of motorists are not even bothered to read the matter printed on these cards. It is a sheer waste of precious resources. I urge these companies to switch to online advertising, which is cheaper and at the same time, a larger customer base can be reached. The benefit will definitely accrue to the companies only. Today, there are plenty of options available to work in a paperless environment. We all have a moral responsibility towards maintaining a healthy environment.

FACTBOX:

In a report published in Gulf News in October 2014, the Department of Economic Development in Dubai (DED) explained that advertising on business cards is illegal, and as per an agreement between the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Interior, companies are not permitted to have employees distribute business cards on streets.
