The Sanskrit name of this posture, Bhujapidasana, translates to "shoulder pressing pose". This posture is deceivingly more about balance than strength. Being an arm-balancing pose, Bhujapidasana can tone and sculpt the arms and shoulders to perfection. This pose is about cooperation and coordination, bringing about a complete sense of balance within the body and the mind.

Procedure

  • Sit on a mat, place the soles of your feet together, keeping your feet slightly away from the body. Let your knees fall to the sides. Place your palms flat on the floor beneath your ankles with your fingers facing forwards.
  • As you press down with your palms, bring your knees as high up your arms as possible, and lift your hips off the ground. Keep the elbows slightly bent and rest your thighs on your upper arms.
  • After you find your balance, raise your feet off the ground and interlock your feet in front of you.

Tip

Try to keep lifting your weight up to your shoulders. Hold the final posture for up to a minute while breathing normally. Reverse the procedure to come out of the posture.

Benefits

  • It tones all the organs.
  • It strengthens the shoulders, arms and wrists.
  • It tones the abdomen and the bottom.
  • It improves balance.
  • It increases flexibility in the lower back and the hip joint.

Caution
