Dubai:  It's "shop 'til you drop" for thousands of shoppers across Dubai today, Tuesday, as the doors to the 12-hour super sale officially open.

The citywide bargain bonanza kicks off at midday and consumers are assured of massive discounts ranging between 25 per cent and 90 per cent at 3,000 retail outlets across the emirate.

The sale is  a curtain-raiser for the month-long Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF). It is probably the last opportunity for budget-savvy consumers to score some bargains before the value-added tax (VAT) takes effect and it applies to clothing, shoes, bags, homeware and electronic goods, among others.

At least 70 affordable to luxury brands have enlisted to offer the discounts, including Lipsy, Splash, Aldo, Juicy Couture, New Look, Forever21,  Home Centre and Giordano, among many others.

Participating outlets are at Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, City Centre Me’aisem, City Centre Barsha and City Centre Al Shindagha.

But even before the official start to the super sale, other retailers of a number of brands, such as H&M, Iconic, Koton and River Island have already started slashing their prices, as shop owners make room for new collection.

Now on its 23rd edition, DSF is held every year and it’s considered the biggest shopping festival in the emirate that generates billions of dirhams in retail expenditures.

In 2011, shoppers spent a whopping Dh15.1 billion during the festival period, with some Dh5.9 billion generated from tourists.

Omar Khoory, managing director of Nakheel Malls, said the upcoming DSF is going to attract more shoppers than ever, with footfall numbers expected to exceed those in the previous editions.

“The Dubai Shopping Festival is one of the busiest periods, with footfalls increasing year on year. We are expecting that the promotions and offers for DSF 2018 will attract more visitors than last year,” Khoory told Gulf News.

Khoory said that the sales promotions during DSF are a key driver for consumer spending. “Dubai is an established shopping destination that encourages visitors and tourists from around the world to visit and find some of the best deals. Such festivals and offers are very effective in stimulating consumer spending because of the volume of discounts and promotions from leading international and local brands,” Khoory said.
