Now, before the more eagle-eyed readers point it out, I realise we bid adieu to our long-term X5M last week. However, an unexpected change of plan meant we could keep the BMW for another week. We couldn't say no now, could we? And I'm glad we didn't, because during its final days here, it sprang an unpleasant surprise on us. The reversing camera is beginning to malfunction and it doesn't look like a problem that's going to be easy or cheap to repair.

However, since this is now the last reportin the series, let's wrap it up with highsand lows of X5M ownership. To get the bad news out of the way first, the 4.4-litretwin-scroll turbo V8 provides kick-in-the-back acceleration, but consequently the fuel economy suffers quite a bit. You'd be luckyto get anything over 13-14mpg if you drive this car enthusiastically like each one of the wheels team members has been doing ever since we got it.

The AC isn't exactly the most effective either — and that is a significant issue when the car has been sitting out in 50-degree heat all day. Finally, the malfunctioning reversing camera could be the start of other technical problems as it's packed with expensive goodies.

On the bright side, this car has enough grunt to shame most sportscars when it comes to sheer pace. The cabin is well built and there's enough room for a family of four and their belongings. And I think it looks great. Having lived with it for more than a month, it's clear the X5M isn't exactly an off-road car, it's an alternative to sport saloons like the brilliant RS6 and M5.
