The Milan Design Week is perhaps the largest annual global event on the planet when it comes to furniture design. Held from June 7 until 12 this year, Salone Internazionale del Mobile – to give it its official title – the trade show saw participation from several international brands and designers in the indystry.
The Middle East was not far behind. There were products from the region’s designers that showcased their latest products at the event. For instance, noted Lebanese designer Richard Yasmine presented her “‘WOVEN Whispers’ – furnishings that are inspired by Modernist forms, but created using ancient wicker techniques from the Middle East.”
Nilufar gallery, which has a substantial presence in the region and represents several prominent designers, presented “a major showcase of works from over twenty-five internationally renowned artists – including Beirut-based designer Khaled El Mays - with various exhibitions spanning Via Della Spiga and the Nilufar Depot.”
Furthermore, Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council celebrated “the spirit of innovation and creativity of indigenous craft heritage with five design collections that reimagine Emirati crafts and culture through a contemporary lens, presented at two separate venues - Cambi Auction House and Palazzo Litta.”
All in all, this edition of Milan Design Week presented an eclectic range of designs, as well as exciting showcases by several designers, brands and galleries from across the globe. However, the Middle East presence was strong!
