Freedom in all its forms is well desired, most deserved, and embraced by each one who resonates with resilience and renewal. As we celebrate the 79th anniversary of India’s independence, we are reminded that true freedom begins with liberating ourselves and our children from the most binding emotion — fear.

The Calm Chair Method is a movement powered by the Kaizen Principle, which implements small improvements on a consistent basis, leading to an improved state called the Kaizen State, wherein a child’s emotional well-being is prioritised alongside clinical excellence.

My philosophy of integrating several modalities in paediatric dental care is based on the belief that “Children may cry in the dental chair for the very first time, but every time after that is alterable.”

From a scientific viewpoint, 97 per cent of brain development occurs by the age of 5 to 7 years. Every childhood experience, including medical or dental, is crucial in shaping lifelong attitudes and emotional resilience.

Recognising the weight of this responsibility, it becomes important to amalgamate both traditional and advanced behaviour management tools so we can successfully create a safe and empowering dental environment.

Foundational techniques like Tell-Show-Do, Positive Reinforcement, Distraction, and Parental Involvement remain key, helping children feel secure and in control.

Yet, what sets The Calm Chair Method apart is the fusion of holistic modalities such as Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Buteyko Breathing, Theta Healing, Hypnotherapy, Psych-K, and Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) principles.

Combined with needle-free technologies like lasers, these tools reduce fear, enhance trust, and foster calm cooperation. As a Master of Science Specialist in Laser Dentistry, I can say with conviction that needle-free dentistry, together with all parallel modalities of The Calm Chair Method, is indeed a breakthrough that helps children see the dental visit in a new light.

Healing in motion

This approach is beyond dentistry; it’s healing in motion, allowing precise behaviour modifications based on a child’s emotional state, past experiences, age, and treatment intensity. When dental anxiety is addressed and managed, we create a pleasant experience, leading to a healthier relationship with oral health care for a lifetime. In essence, The Calm Chair Method is a gentle revolution where science, empathy, and mindful innovation come together to nurture confident, happy, and healthy smiles.

The child is guided through each stage of their dental journey using calming cues, pre-visit preparation, language that builds confidence, and conscious breathing practices. Here, Buteyko Breathing, EFT, Psych-K, and Theta Healing play a vital role. NLP and EYFS principles ensure that the child’s communication and developmental needs are honoured throughout.

Each session becomes an opportunity for the child to experience empowerment over fear, choice over helplessness, and presence over panic. These techniques are bridges between the ancient, modern, clinical care, and emotional intelligence.

A unique dental approach

The UAE is currently establishing itself as a hub for medical innovation, education, and conscious parenting. Thus, the introduction of The Calm Chair Method opens a doorway for an emotionally well-curated dental approach. It reminds practitioners that healing happens in moments of empathy and trust, and it reminds children that they are not alone.

I am honoured to have compiled my decade-long journey of accentuating dental experiences for children in the form of a book, which provides a designated roadmap to every practitioner, parent, and caregiver. The Calm Chair Method’s soft launch on this special Indian Independence Day serves as a reminder that true freedom is not just political or geographical, it is emotional.

When we experience and understand this, we unblock bondages and redefine the meaning of freedom for our generations to come. Jai Hind!
