Excerpts from an exclusive interview.

You’ve become a sought-after name in Dubai’s event industry. What do you think makes a great emcee, and how do you ensure every event you host is unforgettable?

Thank you for saying that! There are many qualities and attributes that make a great emcee. I’ll start with the important ones. Building your own brand and individuality, which is unique, followed by consistency, which is key. If you are able to gear through tough situations, do damage control and charm the audience, you’re a keeper!

Then you have professionalism, spontaneity, diversity, adaptability, connecting with the audience, research, confidence and good communication skills, all leading up to great results.

As for making every event unforgettable, I put in my 100 per cent and make sure the audience gets an experience they will cherish. For that, I prep in advance and then go with the flow of the audience. For me, the audience is the ring master.

As an emcee, engaging diverse audiences is key. How do you adapt your hosting style to different events and ensure the crowd stays entertained and involved?

Absolutely. So the audience is king and reading the room is very important. If we understand the pulse of the audience, we’re good to go. For that we have to understand the tone and language of the audience to cater to them and we can vary our pace and energy. We need to be flexible and improvise accordingly. We also need to evaluate and adjust to what the audience is more responsive to, then we’ve got ourselves a winner!

Every industry has its challenges. What were some of the biggest hurdles you faced in establishing yourself in Dubai, and how did you overcome them?

Quite frankly speaking, my Pakistani roots ended up making things slightly more challenging for me. I was judged for that unfortunately. I had to fit into a competitive market, with my counterparts who already had established PR, great networking and strong platforms. I was confident because I believed in my talent and I had 17 years of prior media experience.

I think my strong portfolio, tenacious nature and consistency of hosting events and building a network made me overcome those challenges. I was goal oriented and didn't give up.

Many emcees work in Dubai, but you’ve quickly risen to the top. What’s your secret sauce – the one thing that makes event organisers choose you over others?

I have the flavour that was missing in the UAE. The way I communicate and my style is different from the rest. Also, when I am given an event, I own it and it’s mine. I make sure the audience and the client go back home all smiles. They should know that if Sophie is hosting, there’s nothing to worry about!

Emceeing seems glamorous, but it also demands energy, preparation, and versatility. Can you share some behind-the-scenes insights on what goes into preparing for a high-profile event?

Good question. All that glitters is not gold! There are many tiers involved for an Emcee for a a high level event. The brief, the event flow, the script, the do’s & dont’s, the wardrobe, the cohost, the activities, the tone, the rehearsal, the madness backstage, the technicalities, the damage control, the sponsors and of course, the last minute changes.

We as hosts have to put the best foot forward in front of the world, camouflaging the spots. So whatever happens back stage, stays backstage!

Many dream of making it big as an emcee. What advice would you give to those looking to build a successful career in the industry, especially in a competitive market like Dubai?

I would say build your own persona. You are the best version of yourself, so don't copy anyone else’s style, create your own. Be consistent, so a lot of time and patience is required. Understand your aptitude, you can't do everything. Build your PR through networking, take calculative risks and most importantly, keep going, as the best is yet to come!
