The UAE’s multicultural demography, along with a steady flow of tourists, is reshaping the country’s food and beverage sector. With diverse cultural influences redefining the market, there is a growing demand for innovative dining experiences and international cuisines.

As consumer preferences evolve, the industry is responding by embracing trends like healthy, plant-based options, unique ingredients, digital ordering, and sustainability to stay competitive.

Healthy eating, with an emphasis on freshly prepared, balanced, and nutrient-dense meals, has become a top priority in today’s wellness-focused world.

“Health-conscious preferences are shaping the market, leading to heightened demand for nutritious options across all categories,” says Monique Naval, Senior Research Analyst at data analytics company Euromonitor International.

Innovations such as plant-based alternatives and clean labels are gaining momentum, as they align with the evolving focus on wellness and healthier eating habits.

Naval highlights the dairy industry’s shift towards healthier options, such as protein-enriched milk and yogurt, as an example of the broader trend towards functional foods.

“Protein and gut health claims are increasingly appearing on packaging, offering consumers products that align with health and fitness trends,” says Naval.

Dr Dhananjay Datar, Chairman and MD of Adil Group of Supermarkets, emphasises the growing demand for health-conscious choices, organic foods, and dietary inclusivity as key drivers of the current market shift.

“Younger generations, in particular, are driving demand for superfoods, plant-based diets, and regional Indian ingredients that promote wellness,” he says.

In response to this shift, Adil has expanded its offerings, now providing a wide range of healthier options, including millets, cold-pressed oils, gluten-free products, and organic staples.

Adil Group leverages data analytics and customer feedback to track emerging food trends. “These allow us to introduce products that resonate with our audience,” says Dr Datar.

Meanwhile, another popular grocery retailer, Choithrams has rolled out an expansive selection of organic, gluten-free, and plant-based offerings to promote healthy eating.

“We offer an array of nutritious options — from organic produce to nutrient-dense snacks and dairy-free alternatives. Our product range is designed to empower customers to make healthier choices,” says Ashutosh Chakradeo, Chief Retail Officer, GCC, Choithrams.

“Transparency has become a non-negotiable factor, with consumers increasingly seeking clean-label products and a clear understanding of the ingredients in their food,” he adds.

Demand for ethical and sustainable choices

The rising focus on sustainability is another significant trend. Consumers are placing greater importance on transparency and sustainable sourcing, encouraging food producers as well as retailers to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

“Today’s younger generation, especially millennials and Gen Z, are redefining the food industry with their expectations for healthier, sustainable, and experience-driven products. They prioritise transparency, clean labels, and ethical sourcing, influencing retailers to adapt their marketing strategies accordingly,” says Kamal Vachani, Group Director and Partner, Al Maya Group.

Local food sourcing

This shift in consumer preferences extends to food sourcing, with a growing demand for local and seasonal produce as people seek freshness and sustainability in their choices.

“Today’s consumers are increasingly conscious of where their food comes from, balancing the appeal of global flavours with a strong preference for locally sourced products,” says Vachani.

At the same time, while local products are seen as an eco-friendly, community-supporting option, global cuisines and exotic ingredients continue to appeal to food lovers.

Moreover, fusion cuisine is on the rise, with UAE consumers increasingly experimenting in their kitchens, blending ingredients and flavours from diverse culinary traditions.

Grocery retailer Adil Group has adapted its product range to help customers explore new flavours and culinary experiences.

“We are incorporating ingredients that blend traditional Indian flavours with global culinary trends. Our goal remains the same – to provide authentic, high-quality Indian products while adapting to modern consumer lifestyles.”

Social media on consumption trends

As more and more consumers turn to social media for meal inspiration, both Naval and Vachani emphasise the growing influence of these platforms in shaping food trends and consumption habits.

“Multichannel marketing is expected to enhance the success of brands by achieving widespread product adoption and promotion,” says Naval.

Brands and retailers are also leveraging digital storytelling and influencer partnerships to resonate with younger, socially engaged audiences.

On-the-go and ready-to-eat

Convenience remains key in the UAE, leading to a surge in ready-to-eat and functional food products catering to fast-paced lifestyles.

“We have observed the growing demand for convenience in the lives of our consumers and responded with a multifaceted approach,” says Chakradeo from Choithrams.

“Our carefully crafted range of ready-to-eat meals offers a convenient solution for those seeking both nutrition and ease. From fresh salads to wholesome, fully prepared meals and portable snacks, our offerings cater to every busy lifestyle ensuring highest standards of quality. We have expanded our delivery services to ensure a seamless shopping journey from the comfort of home.”
