From Topman to Alexander McQueen, we play favourites
The first stop on the menswear calendar is London with the London Collections: Men playing homage to homegrown talents and even recognizing up and coming local designers. We spy luxurious fabrics, burnt oranges and rich toffees, some cross dressing and clean cuts on the catwalk. Here’s our roundup of the top 10 looks for the season.
1. Topman Design: Love the ode to India: check out the sherwani inspired pants and the clever use of the Om symbol.
2. Christopher Kane: Kane’s love affair with Frakenstein continues. The mankles and loafers get our nod for this overall preppy, clean look.
3. Christopher Raeburn: Drab grey sweats, we thought, should be limited to the gym. That is, before we checked out Raeburn’s latest collection of course. Love the patchwork bomber jacket, very luxe sportswear.
4. E. Tautz: No, that’s not Lindsay Lohan trying to escape prison. Sunset hues were aplenty on the runways with Richard Nicoll, Agi & Sam, Hackett and Topman Design all featuring a version. We love Tautz subtle take on the colour. The brocade pants helped us make a decision.
5. Hardy Aimes: Put us down for a coloured suit this season especially such a regal one. The deep aubergine, the richness of the fabric and the beautifully tailored fit – do you see why we’re are drooling here.
6. Jonathan Saunders: Olive green with this neon turquoise blue — a combination we would usually pass off as weird. But here it’s young, it’s edgy, kind of like London the city it was previewed in.
7. Lou Dalton: This for us is the colour of the year, a dark bottle green. The days were a man’s wardrobe was limited to greys, blacks, blues and whites are long gone. It’s the time for deep burgundies and greens as gorgeous as this one.
8. Margaret Howell: C’est magnifique as they would say in Paris, which is what came to mind as we took in this look. Make sure a beret is in your shopping bag this spring.
9. Richard Nicoll: Metallics – check, two tone suit – check, luxurious, textural fabric – check, if it’s checking all the right boxes who are we to argue.
10. Alexander McQueen: Looking past the immaculate hair and plastic wrapped face, as always McQueen’s tailoring and fit is impeccable. The fractured pin stripes and the ankle bearing length are sure to be big this year.
