Always looking for a new (read not so hard) way to get into shape, my ears pricked up when I was told about a workout based around skipping. In a burst of workout excitement about six months back, I’d decided skipping was to be my fitness secret — a combination of the nostalgia of childhood and the seriousness of boxers. I bought a rope — and surprise, surprise — never used it. So when I was called for Skiptrix, I figured it was a message from fitness heaven. Go, my child, and jump rope.

I loved skipping as a kid, and figured this would be the same. It’s not, for one main reason: I am not the slender, energetic person I was when I was five years old. Skiptrix is, however, a way to add fun to cardio workout we all must do.

You’ll be in a class with other ladies of varying levels of fitness, and the nice thing is while it’s all at one pace, you can do as much as you feel able to. There five combinations of footwork (aka trix) that you have to master, and it’s not easy timing your rope to fall so you don’t entangle yourself. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get them right but while you’re doing that, you’re still working up a sweat. Once you’ve got the footwork understood, the workout consists of fast reps of simple jumps plus one of the “trix”, interspersed with lunges and squats — and it’s not as scary as it sounds. Give it a try if you are looking for a fun alternative to traditional aerobics or cardio.

It doesn’t end there — the instructors at Urban Energy (the only company at present doing the classes, they say) are learning new trix all the time.
