Sunrisers managed to choke us in rain-affected tie
It’s extremely rare that both sides feel fairly treated when rain changes the course of a game and the Duckworth/Lewis calculation is used to reach a conclusion. The sooner we can put roofs on all our stadiums the better!
I’m not blaming the rain or the system for our defeat by Hyderabad, however. It certainly wasn’t our best game with bat or ball and we know we could have done better.
It would also be wrong not to acknowledge the quality of the Hyderabad bowling at the death. It’s not very often you will see the final four overs of a T20 match (or a T12 innings) bowled as well as that. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Praveen Kumar conceded less than eight an over when we needed to score at 12 an over. I actually thought we were in with a decent chance at that stage, but much credit must go the bowlers. We might not even have got close if all the catches off Dale Steyn hadn’t been dropped.
We have another short break for a few days before hitting the engine room of the tournament with four or five games in a short space of time involving a lot of travel. It’s vital that we stay in the top half of the table so as not to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves. Having said that, we are a team which knows how to keep winning when we have to.
It was desperately sad to hear about the death of Ankit Keshri after colliding with a teammate in the outfield. I am told he was a fine prospect on the field and a popular young man off it. It was yet another reminder that we should take nothing in life for granted and appreciate every blessing that comes our way. Our thoughts and condolences are with him and his family.
On a happier note, I am able to report that Kallis and Johan Botha remain unbeaten and the undisputed champion golfers of KKR – although our title looked to have been taken away from us in the last outing at Royal Calcutta when the Aussie duo of Bayliss and Hogg took a three-hole lead with three to play. But no sporting contest is ever over until the last possible chance has gone. I rolled a decent birdie putt into the 16th hole, Johan birdied the 17th and I found a good swing on the 18th – and another birdie putt – to halve the match. Trevor and Brad were not amused.
